I know they were from NC, but only because they said tarheel state.

But they said they were 'from carolina'.  I was inquiring it if was common for NC people to say that.

I have never heard anyone say they were from Dakota, for example.

And if both NC and SC people say they were from carolina, it would be confusing.

So that is why I asked..  I thought the way I mentioned it all was clear, but perhaps it was not.
