How long do you save your receipts?

It appears no one has asked this question recently (or at least not quite in this way)…How long do you hold onto your scanned receipts? 
And, how do you organize said receipts? 
Mine are multiplying like bunnies and I need to know to purge or not to purge-that is the question! (I hope it’s not 7 years like IRS forms!)

@Tikiki Great question! Folks that have been doing this longer than me are likely to have a different answer, but I purge mine monthly when I check everything off my credit card statement (used to earn cashback then paid in full). After verifying the totals are correct on the bill I then shred anything older than 2 weeks, unless of course it has something on it (like electronics) that I may need it for later. I'll be interested to see what everyone else has to say though!

I recycle junk mail envelopes, the long ones, using an envelope opener, each one containing receipts for one month.

I save them for 6 months, but most of the receipts tend to be garbage within a month, with WM being the worst.

If it happens to be something 'important' that I may need to return, or that is required for taxes, I keep it elsewhere.

I have a spreadsheet of all things bought, listing each item per receipt and all the rebates / discounts, etc.   The envelope has receipts in the same order.   That way I can always search for it and then go to the correct envelope.

This system makes it extremely simple to find 10 good receipts to submit to Amazon Shopper Panel the first of each month to lock in my $10.

I have household receipts going back to 2010. Major purchases farther than that. All are organized by date and placed in yearly envelopes stored in the filing cabinet. I meant to hold them only ten years so I'm behind in trashing the oldest ones. Now let me tell you about my sock drawer. 🤓

I used to keep all household ones basically forever by month, but then I started looking at them, and realized most of the ink was gone.   The Kroger and WM receipts are lucky to make it a month.  Have you looked back to see the state of your regular household ones?

@Rickibotta  Just checked and the majority of them still look as good as new. There’s some that look like they were just printed.

I do about 2 weeks or so. I literally have them shoved in an old envelope from a bill! Lol

.....prob will just trash the envelope when it starts to burst. I figure for little grocery credits it's not that serious... but if there is a high dollar amount attached like a big Walmart amount or a bigger purchase where you are getting anything over 20.00 bucks i may save that longer or keep it in another spot. 

I have read about ppl get reverals MONTHS later and that scares me....but I have had no issues yet 🤞

I don't have a specific timeline. Just whenever my storage container gets filled. Oldest receipts are Oct 2020. I didnt even realize, but your question, @Tikiki got me wondering too! I use a cple of small storage containers (sz of shoes). One for submitted receipts and one for problem receipts, that need a trouble ticket, etc.

Having the receipts is kinda an "in case" security, but also gives me a sense of satisfaction/encouragement  to see what my efforts accomplish.
